EXPLORE WHAT'S NEW ON THE BLOG

A Little Disclaimer
The Girl Who Put It Back is a personal blog about my own experiences with thrifting, bargain hunting, shopping habits, money, and learning to buy less.
I'm not a financial advisor, mental-health professional, addiction specialist, or shopping expert. I'm simply sharing what I'm learning as I work through my own habits and relationship with spending.
Nothing on this site is intended to be financial, medical, mental-health, or addiction treatment advice. Your circumstances are your own, and what works for me may not work for you.
Take what is helpful, leave what isn't, and when you need professional advice, talk to a qualified professional.
Mostly, I'm just here to remind myself—and maybe you—
You can love it without owning it.
I have a problem with good deals.
Put me in a thrift store and suddenly I need a vintage basket.
Take me to a garage sale and I'll convince myself that $3 is basically free.
Show me something marked down 70% and, apparently, my brain forgets how money works.
I've always loved finding things. The thrill of the hunt. The old stuff.
The beautiful stuff. The “I can't believe someone is selling this for $5?!” stuff.
And for a long time, I told myself I was being smart with money because I wasn't paying full price.
But here's the uncomfortable truth:
I was still shopping.
A $5 thrifted item is still $5.
A garage-sale haul is still money leaving the bank account.
And “but it's such a good deal” doesn't magically turn something I don't need into something I need.
So I'm trying something different.
I'm learning to walk into a thrift store and walk back out empty-handed.
I'm learning to spend weekends not trying to be at the best garage sale in town.
I'm learning that a bargain isn't actually a bargain if I didn't need it in the first place.
And I'm learning that maybe the best thing I can bring home isn't another treasure.
I'm learning that: THE BEST BARGAIN MIGHT BE WALKING AWAY.
Maybe it's the money I decided to keep.
I'm not a financial expert. I'm not a minimalist. I'm not someone who has mastered this.
I'm just a girl who realized that her love of bargains was costing her more than she wanted to admit.
So this is where I'm starting.
I'm putting my shopping habit on hold and sharing the experience,
in hopes of finding I'm not the only one, and maybe helping someone else along the way.
There will probably be things I almost buy.
There will definitely be things I regret buying.
There will be things I sell.
There will be things I put back.
And hopefully, little by little, there will be more money in the bank,
less stuff in the house, and a little more freedom.
Welcome to The Girl Who Put It Back.
